An opinion on Tyler Weinman 6/11/2010

Now that a Texas judge decided in the sentencing in the cat mutilation and killings by Austin Pattersen to "set an example," by sentencing this sicko to 8-years in prison, hopefully, the judge in the Tyler Weinman case in Florida will follow suit.

Mr. Weinman admitted to detectives he would be willing to tell them about his adventures in mutilating and killing of cats if the detectives could make the felony charges go away.

So, regardless of the DNA results, Mr. Weinman is guilty in these hideous acts by his own admission, recorder or not. Mr. Weinman is a sicko too.

It is my hope the Florida judge will give Mr. Weinman the reward he deserves.

7/11/2010 - It's official! 8 yrs in prison - Judge sets example

It is official!  Austin Pattersen has been convicted of mutilating and murdering cats in the San Antonio area.  His father, a former officer in the US Military, and uncle, a former police officer, cried during sentencing.  Mr. Pattersen has been in a mental institution since being charged with these crimes.

His father and uncle expressed concerns that young Austin would be abused in prison?  But, the judge said he had received so many letters from the public regarding Pattersen's hideous crimes that he felt the need to set an example and sentence Austin Pattersen to eight-years in prison.

Tyler Weinman Case: Update 5/27/10 - Cutting Tools Yield No Cat DNA - Trial will proceed 10/25

The second round of DNA tests are back regarding the cutting tools the police seized from Mr. Weinman and they did not yield any relative amount of cat-DNA. There were some dog hairs, human hair, and one cat hair, but Weinman owns two pets, a cat and a dog.

Weinman's lawyer, David Macey says this proves his client was not involved with the cat murders. However, Police and the DA point out that Weinman's car had been secretly equipped with a GPS unit after he became a suspect. Weinman was stopped early one morning only feet from where a cat's body was discovered at the same time.

The most guilty-aimed evidence comes directly from Mr. Weinman, who just before asking for a lawyer had ask a detective if the felony charges could go away if he told them about some of the cats. It will be up to the detective who interviewed Weinman to convince the court the request was ever made. It seems the police failed to record the initial interview after Weinman was arrested and brought to the police station.

Update 5/22/2010 -- House Arrest Continues - Defense Says Pit Bulls Killed Cats - Trial 10/25?

The judge, on May 5, 2010, gave Tyler an ok to spend time with his mom for Mother's Day, away from his home where he is under electronically monitored house arrest. The bad news given at the same hearing is Mr. Weinman will remain under house arrest (He has been under house-arrest since last June 2009), and no approval to attend classes in-person. Mr. Weinman can take classes online only.

It was during this hearing on May 5 that a start-date for trial was set for October 25, 2010.

The pending question now should be "will there be a trial?" Mr. Weinman appeared with his lawyer, David Macey, at a hearing yesterday, May 21, 2010, where Mr. Macey asked the judge if Mr. Weinman could leave his house to go get a haircut? And, although, the question was asked, I have not been able to find if the judge ever approved or denied the request.

More important was comments made by Mr Macey regarding how these cats actually died. Mr. Macey has suggested that it was not Mr. Weinman who killed the cats, but, rather a pack of five pit bull dogs which had been tied to cat killings just days before Mr. Weinman's arrest. Mr. Macey now suggest these same dogs were responsible for all the cat killings.

If this case ever goes to trial it will go, or not go, based on the results of DNA evidence from the cutting tools seized by police from Mr Weinman. Previous DNA results from the bodies of the cats showed no DNA found belonging to Mr. Weinman.

Everyone is still waiting on the results of the cutting tools seized from Mr. Weinman where the DNA results must show they have cat-DNA upon them. The judge ordered all tests to be completed by mid-June (2010).

As of now Tyler Weinman is currently charged with 21 felony counts, which include animal cruelty and animal mutilation of 21 neighborhood cats. Since Mr. Weinman's arrest (6/2009) he has been electronically monitored and under house arrest. No cats have been harmed since Mr. Weinman's arrest.

Previous Court Appearances:

During February 2010, it was revealed that Miami-Dade's crime lab had found no human DNA on 11 of the cats that Weinman is accused of killing. Without a DNA connection it is likely Mr. Weinman will go free.

However, he's not out of the woods yet. Prosecutors are still awaiting the results of tests on scalpels, clothes and other items taken from Weinman.

Weinman is due back in court on May 5, when the additional lab tests are expected to be completed.

Weinman in court February 24, 2010

(image via CBS4 - Miami)
(image via CBS4 - Miami)

Next Court Date: March 24, 2010

Update: 2/25/2010

Mr. Weinman appeared in court Wednesday, February 24, for a status-hearing (above picture).     The next scheduled hearing is set for March 24, where at that time the DA will have to say where the DNA testing is in regarding the cutting instruments seized from Weinman and how long till the results are in.  Weinman was given an ok by the judge to attend college orientation, but, still must rule if he can attend classes in-person or online.

DNA results from 11 of the 19 mutilated cat bodies produced NO Weinman DNA, and no other human DNA.  David Macey, Mr. Weinman's attorney, made note of the fact Mr. Weinman is innocent.

However, the cutting instruments found in Mr. Weinman's car are still pending DNA results, and, I believe those results will determine if the case moves forward, or, Mr. weinman is set free.

A tracking device installed by police on Mr. Weinman's car put him in the area of the mutilations, and at the time of the mutilations, but, did not really give any concrete evidence.

So, we wait on the DNA results of the cutting instruments.

-----end 2/23 update------

Mr. Weinman has told the judge hearing his case he has received his GED. (Previously he had been expelled by two high schools, so he did not graduate.)

He ask the judge if he could get off house-arrest to attend Miami-Dade College. The judge told him he suspects Weinman will use the guise of attending classes as a reason to just hangout out at the college and suggested he look into online classes.

The judge did say he was willing to allow him to meet with an college-advisor to set up a plan for study, but, that was pretty much it.

Weinman's attorney, David Macey, ask the authorities to disclose the results of DNA tests conducted on cutting instruments seized from Weinman last June. Police said the results are not back yet.

The judge and the public are annoyed as to the length of time it is taking to get this case to trial. The judge said that at the current-pace the trial may not begin until 2011.

Miami-Dade court records (below) show Mr. Weinman is due back in court at 9am on Friday February 19!

Last Court appearance 11-10

11/10/09 - Mr. Weinman appeared in court today with his attorney, David Macey. I'm still waiting for the database to be updated to view the next court date for the felony cat killing charges. The judge today felt Mr. Weinman had suffered enough being under house arrest (he could not leave his front yard) and ok'd Mr. Weinman to travel with his family to Orlando to carve Turkey for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Mr. Weinman is, again, due in court on November 29 regarding his marijuana possession charge. I will update the court records when they become available.

Below are the results of a search I did using the Miami Dade Courts public records database:

Here's more on Mr. Tyler Weinman:

11/3/09 -- 220am PST -- No further information is available at this time on Tyler Weinman. He was scheduled to appear regarding a marijuana possession charge. The possession charge occurred last May. Weinman was arrested and charged, last June, with torturing, killing, and mutilating 19 cats.

11/2/09 - Tuesday: Finally, it's out-of-the-shadows and back into the public-eye for our young "accused" cat killer. Although that day-in-court is still eight days away, today, we'll at least get a chance to hear him plead his case regarding his marijuana-possession charge. Last May, before being arrested for the cat killings, Tyler Weinman was stopped late at night by police who found marijuana (and a "cutting instrument") outside the driver door of Weinman's car.

10/10/09: Additional information comes from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. It appears during the "status hearing" Mr. Weinman's attorney, David Macey told the court he had not seen the evidence collected by police during a search of Mr. Weinman's parents' homes and automobile. The court was told the items are still being processed for the police investigation. The judge set the next date for court on this matter for November 10. Mr. Weinman appeared with his mother at yesterday's hearing.

Source for above addition: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Update 10/8/09

Tyler Weinman appeared in court today for a "status" hearing to see how he has been doing during his house-arrest and monitoring. He is free on $250,000 bail. Although a trial date has not, yet, been set, Mr. Weinman will return to court on November 10, 2009. Along with house arrest and electronic monitoring he must attend counseling classes weekly.

AN OPINION: 8/28/2009

Recently, I read a future perspective regarding young Tyler getting off on a technicality. It brings back the connection this article was originally about; "Cat Killers? Future Serial Killers?" It is the last two paragraphs of an opinion:

from: http://catsworking.wordpress.com/2009/08/26/florida-taxpayers-ordered-to-foot-cat-killer’s-defense/

by Cole

"...Since being released on bond in June, Weinman has been under house arrest with a monitoring ankle bracelet. His grandfather is putting up $50,000 for his defense and helped post the $249,000 bond that sprang him from the slammer.

This family is sinking everything it has to prove the unemployed 18-year-old dropout they love is innocent. If they succeed in getting him off on a technicality, let’s hope he doesn’t show his gratitude by disemboweling and skinning them."

Previous updates follow the lead-story.

The Story To-Date:

South Florida teenager Tyler Hayes Weinman, 18, was arrested Sunday morning by police for the horrific killings and shocking mutilation of cats in his neighborhood. The killings have scared and frightened residents in Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay, two Miami area communities.

Over twenty-four cats have been found dead and mutilated with some skinned, using a sharp straight cutting instrument. A neighbor, Thomas Shad said he had suspected someone in the neighborhood was the killer. His little black cat Miss Kitty was one of the cats killed. Mr. Shad lives near the home of Tyler Weinman.

The first of the more than two dozen killings began in May, with four just down the street from Weinman's mother's house. Several weeks ago police took Weinman into custody at the beginning of his prom night for questioning. Arriving at the police station Weinman was still dressed in his tuxedo. He missed his prom!

"If they do get the wrong guy and it's not him, they've ruined his life as it is right now," said 19-year-old Kyle Hantzis, who lives next door to Weinman. Hantzis' father is dating Weinman's mother. Hantzis went on to say the teenager was quiet and well-spoken. "I don't think, the way he acts and his demeanor, I don't think he could physically do it."

"He's nice guy. I've known him since sixth grade," said Vincent Warger, 18, who attended Palmetto High. "He was the kind of kid I hung out with in a group. He's pretty cool, a chill guy. Seemed like a pretty normal kid. I've been to a few parties at his house."

Weinman has just graduated from Palmetto High School. Around midnight Sunday Amanda Setney, 17, was awakened to the sounds of loud pounding on Alba Weinman's door. Next, came shouts of "open up, police!"

Police records indicate a search warrant was issued for the house, which was thoroughly searched including an out building in the backyard. From accounts it appeared Weinman was not home.

Near 12:30am, Weinman was arrested in the middle of a party. Two undercover officers in plain shirts and jeans walked into 19-year-old Kevin Corona's party at his parent's Coral Gables home.

Several of the hundred in attendance were camp counselors at Swim Gym. Weinman was a Swim Gym camp counselor, and worked odd jobs around the neighborhoods.

He was arrested twice as a juvenile, and on May 29, for possession of marijuana.

Several days before his arrest a neighborhood meeting about the killings was held. Several residents spoke of "Weinman's situation." They spoke of a teen who lived between his parents' homes in both towns, which would allow him to attack cats in both neighborhoods. Weinman's parents were divorced in 2006, and each live in one of the two neighborhoods where the killings have taken place. Weinman's father is a dentist and lives in Palmetto Bay. His mother is a life coach and lives in the Whispering Pines neighborhood in Cutler Bay, where the killings began.

Neighbors and animal-advocacy groups offered a $10,000 reward through the Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers program.

On Sunday, the Facebook page of Weinman's girlfriend, Valentina Contesse, 18, was filled with supportive comments from her friends.

"hey val . . . i just heard. sorry about all of this. we all love you!" stated one comment. Others said they didn't believe the charges against him.

"Palmetto Bay was just lookin for anyone to point their finger to," stated another person.

Kathy Hernandez, who has known Weinman since he attended middle school, said he was caring and a sweet boy who often played with his dog. She said she thinks they have the wrong guy.

Hernandez said Weinman had a healthy relationship with his stepmother -- who married his father last year and who neighbors described as a cat-lover.

''He was always so nice to my animals,'' Hernandez wrote in an e-mail to The Miami Herald. “I have three cats and they loved him.”

Police had been keeping an eye on Weinman over the past several weeks, and it is now being reported comments Weinman made online brought police to him. Police would not say what type of Facebook or MySpace posting he made that led them to him, or whether someone else pointed them toward.

Barbara Wiesinger of Cutler Bay learned Sunday morning of the arrest. Wiesinger's calico cat, Cami, is believed to be among the early victims. Cami was found in a neighbor's yard (May 13) with her eyes gouged out and her snout cut off. Wiesinger said, she thinks more than one person had to have been involved.

Police said Weinman sliced open some of the cats' bellies and gutted them, crushed their skulls and often threw the carcasses onto their owners' front yards.
Since there was no blood near the carcass, some believe they were killed elsewhere and then dumped.

“These awful scenes inflicted a great human toll,'' said Cutler Bay Mayor Paul Vrooman.

“Serial Killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, and Albert DiSalvo (The Boston Strangler) are known to have killed and tortured animals as children before moving on to their human victims. Obviously, there are many factors that lead someone to murder or serial killing, but that constant link is animal abuse." (un-quote)

It has been researched and noted by the FBI that there is a correlation between serial killers and animal abuse/torture. They have linked animal cruelty to domestic violence, child abuse and serial killings.

A study done by North Eastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to abuse humans than people who do not.” (End Quote)

SOURCE:http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/425882/the_link_between_animal_abuse_and_serial.html?cat=17

This study says “Animal abuse is a recognized sign of a mental disorder. If a child hurts animals it should be a red flag and immediate action should be taken. While there are many factors that contribute to someone becoming a serial killer, the one constant they share is animal abuse.”

--Jeffrey Dahmer showed an well focused interest in dismembering and torturing animals as a child. As an adult he was charged with torturing. murdering, eating and dismembering at least sixteen people. Albert Disalvo (better known as the Boston Strangler) used to trap dogs and cats, as a child and then shoot them with arrows. Edward Emil Kemper lll was convicted of killing eight women, one of which was his own mother. When he was thirteen-years-old he would kill neighborhood cats and put their heads on poles. Edward Kemper killed his own cat, decapitated it and then cut it into small pieces. This is the same thing he did to his own mother. David Berkowitz was convicted of thirteen murders and attempted murders. He used to abuse the neighborhood dogs. He shot one neighbors dog because according to him, the dog was an "evil force" that compelled him to kill. Ted Bundy was convicted of two murders though he was suspected of at least forty! Bundy used to watch as his own father tortured animals. Eventually, Bundy did the same. Andrew Cunanan was the man who killed designer Versace and was suspected in the murders of five other people. Cunanan used to gather crabs and then burn their eyes out with a lighted match. He would watch their eyes sizzle then turn them loose. -- (1)

In September 2007, Austin Patterson, 19, of Universal City, Texas, was arrested after only three weeks of living with his new roommate. His roommate, Michael Reeves, 18, said "I was going through my friend's camera phone, and I found pictures. ... One picture with yellow gloves covered in blood and the next picture with a decapitated, bloodied cat in the bathroom...and that no one in the apartment owned cats but several times he found cat hair in the residence. ”

Universal City police Detective Tina Vitacco said police were alerted to the June 25 (2007) incident report, written by a San Antonio police officer, that described a man who wore gloves, leaned over a bathtub and sawed "off the head of a cat" in an apartment in the 8700 block of Datapoint Drive (the residence of Austin Patterson). A resident of the apartment where that incident took place said Patterson lived with him briefly. Several things, said resident Michael Reeves, led him to call police in June.

According to the June (2007) police report, “three cat tongues were found in medicine bottles in the freezer of Reeves' apartment,” along with a "black box with knives and other instruments" in the apartment. And on at least one occasion, Reeves said he told police that he discovered that two pairs of his shoelaces were missing.

Patterson is accused of mutilating three cats and duct-taping their legs to a piece of plywood in Northeast Bexar County, a police detective said.

The three gray tabby cats — including a 3-year-old male named Taylor that was registered to Patterson and two others about 2 years old — were found by a man walking along the Cibolo Creek trails, said Detective Vitacco.

Under a sweatshirt police found the bodies arranged in the shape of a triangle. One was disemboweled, at least two had their throats slit and all three had fishing line tied around their necks, Vitacco said. The cats' legs were duct-taped and their bodies slashed, a police report said.

A box of nails, a hammer, scissors and knives were found next to the cats.
Police believe all three cats were bought on Craigslist, an online classified community, Vitacco said.

Patterson was jailed on a $61,000 bond for torturing three gray tabby cats.
My research in what was the outcome of Mr. Patterson's trial is still on-going, but, I will update with my findings. Nothing found as of 6/30/2009

UPDATES for Tyler Weinman, Florida

UPDATE 6/15/2009:

Mental evaluation ordered for teen cat-killing suspect:

UPDATE 6/19/2009:

Tyler Weinman, Florida teenager charged with string of cat killings, released on bond.

UPDATE 6/25/2009:

"We have not confirmed he acted alone,'' prosecutor Michael Von Zamft said Wednesday during a hearing on whether to unseal Weinman's arrest affidavit..." (quote from the Miami Herald)

The Miami Herald and CBS have ask the arrest-affidavit be unsealed immediately.

Weinman will be arraigned July 6, before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Thornton. It is unlikely Judge Thornton will unseal the affidavit before the July 6th date. Police have not ruled out Weinman had accomplices, and the investigation is continuing.

UPDATE 6/29/2009: added mugshot photo

UPDATE 7/6/2009: Details of secret arrest warrant affidavit:

(Another UPDATE 7-11-2009 follows this lengthy addition)

Tyler Weinman, was arraigned Monday morning in Miami-Dade court.

His sealed affidavit was also released. The details released in the affidavit include:

- One cat's head was smashed on a sidewalk

- A few cats were slashed open and disposed of at a different location

- Some cats were decapitated

- Some cats had their groins mutilated

- When detectives told Weinman that cats in his neighborhood were being killed, he laughed.

Here is a list of other case-related information:

- Police pulled Weinman over for running a stop sign on May 15. At the traffic stop police found a cutting instruments and marijuana on the ground next to the driver's door. He had scratches on his back and neck consistent with those of a cat. He also volunteered to show officers other scratches he had received from, what he said was a stray cat he had been feeding.

- told police he despises his father and after being expelled from high school due to marijuana, said he didn't need to go to school because his "grades were off the chart."

- Weinman became excited when discussing cat dissection at high school and told detectives that when skin is torn from a cat, it "makes a certain sound." He communicated to the detective that Palmetto Senior High was the only high school in the district that dissected cats. He went on to inform police the procedures he had learned in the dissection process, as, well, as the "tearing sound" made when a cutting open a cat's body. He said cats were brought in from Mexico for the school dissection project.

Other facts in this case:

- Doctors from the Psychological Services Section said the person responsible for killing the cats are suffering from a Conduct Disorder** and would be a Sociopath

(Conduct Disorder definition from Wikipedia [wikipedia.com]:

"Conduct disorder is a psychiatric category to describe a pattern of repetitive behavior where the rights of others or the current social norms are violated. Symptoms include verbal and physical aggression, cruel behavior toward people and pets, destructive behavior, lying, truancy, vandalism, and stealing.

Conduct disorder is a major public health problem because youth with conduct disorder not only inflict serious physical and psychological harm on others, but they are at greatly increased risk for incarceration, injury, depression, substance abuse, and death by homicide and suicide. After the age of 18, a conduct disorder may develop into antisocial personality disorder.")

- Weinman's teachers said he was troubled, frequently late and had a bad attitude.

- Weinman became a member of a Facebook group called "Catch-The-Cat-Killer!"

- Weinman is charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal's body. He also faces four counts of burglary related to the cat deaths.

What police knew and when:

- Weinman was first suspected by police around May 14. Just prior to the first suspicions six cats were found mutilated and dead. He was spotted walking through the Whispering Pines neighborhood of Cutler Bay around 2a.m., according to detective Dominick Columbro, who made the initial contact. At the time he was about a half mile from his home.

On May 15, police received an anonymous call saying Weinman had been seen in the neighborhood around 3a.m. At around 6a.m., the same morning, another mutilated cat was found where Weinman had been seen using his cell phone three hours earlier.

After the initial interview the killings moved to the Palmetto Bay neighborhoods. Between May 15 and May 25, Weinman was living with his father in the same neighborhood.

On May 19th, Detective Columbro received permission to tap Weinman's cell phone and put a tracking device on his black Honda Civic.

On June 6, another dead cat was found lying next to its owner's mailbox. The cat's owner said she had last seen her cat alive around 8:30 in the evening. Neighbors had observed a car matching Weinman's black Honda Civic parked facing the woman's house around the same time. The tracking device put on Weinman's car by police shows that Weinman's car returned to the neighborhood on June 6th at 1:57 a.m. and stopped for nearly two minutes.

Later, on the same day, the device shows Weinman's car returned to the neighborhood and stopped for nearly nine minutes within a third of a mile from where the cat's body would be discovered.

He was arrested and held over for a bail hearing and an evaluation by doctors.

UPDATE: 7/11/2009:

Court documents show scalpels, knives, nylon rope with duct tape attached, computers, cameras and clothing were among items seized by detectives investigating alleged cat serial killer Tyler Weinman. Police are waiting on blood, hair, and DNA results to see if any can be linked to the killings. Earlier, a cutting device was found outside Weinman's car's driver window during an early morning traffic stop by police. The cutting tool had blood on it. With the cutting tool found outside the car police found a bag of marijuana.

Weinman, who pleaded not-guilty will be back in court in October.

Douglas Weinman, Tyler's father, had his house searched and police seized the most items, including a wooden spear gun, more than a dozen cutting and dental tools and electronics. Tyler's mother's house was also searched. The Weinman's are divorced and live separately. Tyler Weinman lived with both, and it was in, both, those neighborhoods the cats were killed and mutilated.

There has been no cat killings since Weinman's arrest in the affected area.

Update 8/10/2009:

Court documents show Mr. Weinman told police, prior to his June 14 arrest, he was willing to tell them about some of the cat mutilations if they could make "other" charges go away. Weinman's request was not tape recorded because no recorder was available at the time of questioning. The discussion was ended when Weinman requested his attorney, David Macy. Macy says the whole conversation is misleading and no-part can be admitted because police did not record the conversation.

This information comes from the Miami Hearld 8/10/2009:

Documents: teen in cat killing case wanted deal:http://www.miamiherald.com/news/florida/AP/story/1163732.html

Update: 8/24/2009

The lawyer representing Mr. Weinman appeared in court today to say he expects the case to be huge, possibly up to 100 witnesses. He told Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Thornton that Weinman's family is already struggling to pay legal fees and asked the county to assist. Judge Thornton approved $10,000 to pay for depositions and $2,500 for investigative costs. Tyler Weinman is charged with 19 counts each of animal cruelty, improperly disposing of an animal body, and four counts of burglary related to the cat deaths. He has pleaded not guilty.

People need to learn to keep their cats inside.

kara 20 months ago

Well I guess next time they should stop and think about the crime they are committing and the time they can do in Prison before doing it then. I don't feel sorry for them at all or the 8yrs Austin is doing, or the time Tyler could do!! I just hope when they get out, they don't do it again or do worse!! This just shows you, you can't kill cat's and do no time for it when convicted of it!

Kyle 20 months ago

I don't think his punishment meets his crime. He killed CATS and he gets 8 years. You people are crazy thinking he should get max punishment 100+ years for killing cats. Give me a break.

Bell gardens 21 months ago

I really hope if he is truly guilty he gets the

maximum in punishment..... I do believe he did it and his parents and friends around him should open their eyes and get him help so he doesn't become a serial killer.... But if it wasn't him y did the killings stop??

STC25 23 months ago

These guys belong behind bars. period. They have serious psychological issues that even with treatment may be carried out once they are free. Family and friends of these two are in serious denial. If and when they get out they will act again...it would only be a matter of time.

Once again you speak of what you do not know. Go read the transcript of the trial and you will see how pleased the judge was with his progress and that it would serve no good to put this particular defendant in prison, but he was going to send a message to future cat killers. If you want to applaud that and take the stand that no one is redeemable, be my guest. I think anybody with a mental illness that is proven would take exception to being called a sicko. Ignorance must be bliss. I hope there is nothing in your past or family that would qualify you as a bad person, God forgive you never be forgiven for anything you've done wrong and as far as I'm concerned the only person that qualifies for that distinction is Jesus Christ. Although, that's probably not your thing either.

pinktaxi profile image

pinktaxi Hub Author 23 months ago

If using the word "sicko" offends you, well, why don't you come up with another word to describe the type of person who would initiate such treatment against helpless animals?

I notice you even used the word "sick" in your response. Sick and Sicko pretty much lay in the same field.

And, let's not drag the van der Sloot story into this. You, see, van der Sloot has already achieved being a serial-killer, where as Pattersen and Weinman have not achieved such elevated acts yet.

I would bet, however, that somewhere back in van der Sloot's past helpless animals were part of his early fun.

Once, again, I applaud the judge for giving the sentence he did. You want to do the crime? Well, then, you've got to do the time.

And, if it were up to me? He would never get back to mingling with the public. He'll be a sicko all his life.

jordan78 23 months ago

If it makes everyone feel better to call Austin a sicko power to you. For the record, Austin was very sick and yes his family sought out professsional help only to be put off again and again until he performed these heinous acts, which are inexcusable and my heart goes out to the families that have to live with this everyday, but since Austin finally received psychiatric help and was diagnosed and medicated, he has truly changed and trying to come to grips with what he's done. Even the judge recognized what he's been able to accomplish and how much he's changed and the best I can tell, public sentiment was the only thing he based his verdict on. I don't begin to know what the right punishment would be, but I find it hard to believe he was given 8 yearsfor this act and if I'm not mistaken Joren Van Der Sloot is now in a position to get 9 years for brutally murdering 2 girls. Somebody please explain that one to me. Regardless, I love Austin and believe this is over the top

Thank you Tina V and Bjg. I was able to find just one-article about Mr. Pattersen's sentencing. It's amazing only one article exists which verified the sentencing.

I applaud the TX Judge who imposed the eight year sentence.

I have updated my article and included the link to the single story. It's amazing there was written only one-story.

I went to high school with Austin and he was sentenced 8 years in prison today.

I work with this goy who said he killed a cat but he was young. the next day he said he tied fireworks to a puppy's tail but said he was young. The third day he said, I haven't seen my brother in nine years. He robbed some people and lkeft their home. He than decided to go back and slit their throats. Those people survived and the brother is in jail. I called the guy I work with a serial killer. This is what they do. Normal people do not do things like that when they are kids. It is all about right from wrong. These types don't have that in their brains.

Logger 2 years ago

If they will kill an animal (and I mean outside of a normal hunting situation) they are not far from having the ability to kill a person.

B.Timko - thank you for your comment and especially the info. I have added the contact-info as an update to my article. Yes, if convicted Mr. Weinman must be held accountable!!

B. Timko 2 years ago

Hello, I am A animal lover from Miami Florida. I am concerned that the cat killer,

Tyler Hayes Weinman, Will not receive the Full penalty of the law(158 years).Serial

Killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, and Albert DiSalvo

(The Boston Strangler) are known to have killed and tortured animals before

moving on to their human victims. Obviously, there are many factors that lead

someone to murder or serial killing, but that constant link is animal abuse.

It has been researched and noted by the FBI that there is a correlation between

serial killers and animal abuse/torture. They have linked animal cruelty to

domestic violence, child abuse and serial killings.

A study done by North Eastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that

people who abuse animals are five times more likely to abuse humans than

people who do not.

I would like to see Tyler Weinman sentenced to A minium of one year in

prison(hopefully many more). This would make him A felon under florida law, and

would make it illegal for him to own or posess any firearms or any other deadly

weapons. It would also keep him under law enforcements scrutiny for the rest of

his life.

To this end I am going to list his judges contact information, and also the link to

the Dade County Clerk of the Courts web page so you are able to keep up with his

next court dates. Also included is A list of his charges.

Please feel free to contact the judge and/or his assistant with A list of you're

concerns.

I agree. This kind of behavior is not okay... It's widely known that youth that commit these kinds of crimes against living things may become serial killers in the future.

There have been those who have the best of parents and family and still end up "damaged goods." It's genetics. I see two paths in front of him. What path he ends up on will depend on the outcome of this trial - IF - it ever occurs.

The two paths are prison and freedom. Prison will cost the public money and freedom widens the range of what the public will receive - his ability to move on to bigger prey.

Either way the public loses. Either way we pay. We either pay with money, or we pay with loss of life.

We, as Americans, however must hold dear-to-our-hearts "innocent, until proven guilty."

That thought still plays into "a tangled web," when trials are given to those where there is physical evidence, such as body parts found in Jeffery Dahmers freezer, and skulls on bed posts, John Wayne Gacy with bodies in his crawl space.

Young Tyler was never seen doing anything or having cat pieces nearby his person.

I do wonder about his previous arrests and what they were for? I do know no cats have been affected since he was put under house arrest.

I don't believe parents who coddle and spoil their kids produce evil children. Its a "force" inside a being, itself, which nurtures evil. The bottom line is genetics.

I do believe in the separation of church and state, strongly! But, our inability as a society, as a country, as, a state, as, a town, as parents, to teach what the ten commandments say, has produced a meaner world.

Even without religion, or religious connection, the ten commandments make a lot of good sense. Good sense to pass on to the next generations. It's something we have failed to do.

In, my opinion, as far as Tyler is concerned...

Well, let me be blunt, the guy's got a screw-loose.

SmartestOne 2 years ago

Kudos to you for a very well-done blog!! I appreciate the updates.

This Weinman kid is really screwed up in the head. No doubt he has been CODDLED and SPOILED ROTTEN by his family. (Grandpa putting up his bond and underwriting his defense are clues.) He already has a RECORD, so his family is aware that he has "ISSUES."

Can an 18-year-old sociopath who has no respect for LIFE be helped by mental health professionals? Somehow I doubt it. I think it's too late.

If our society were perfect we would get rid of people like this -- permanently. AFTER we inflict the same torture and pain upon them as they did to their poor victims, human OR animal.

lule 2 years ago

The family needs to come out of denial admit Tylers guilt. He is a sick individual, one day that monster will father a demon child and they will skin innocent animals together. I for one am willing to pay for his VASECTOMY.

Zeta!

Many times folks say society puts too many labels on things.

And, as, a society, we do.

When it comes to one-being deliberately hurting another and/or getting joy from the initiation of the act, we, as, society don't like to speak of such.

RED-FLAG! At the very least! I certainly agree with the entire context of your comment. And, I do hope this case brings these parallels (animal torturer as children, serial killer as adults)to the surface.

Society prefers this to go away, and our Press seems to mirror society. This case has fallen completely off radar.

(The only thing Tyler Weinman's name is firmly attached, recently, are unrelated pieces where folks have used his name as a "tag" to generate traffic to/from their article and/or website)

I hope this Weinman case doesn't go the way of the Austin Pattersen case. Austin Pattersen was a lot like Tyler Weinman. I have never been able to find any followup information either to what happened to Austin Pattersen, nor, if his animal torture case ever went to trial.

I can't help but wonder if this will become a plea-deal, and/or his family will be able to buy him out of this.

I keep as close of tabs I can on him from out in Oregon, but, I'm surprised no one down there in Florida is, at least, making some calls.

If I had free phone service I'd be making the calls. At, least I've got a good Internet hook in young Tyler.

Again, thank you for caring and making some very good points!

Zeta 2 years ago

I have been watching this case also. This is an important case and the outcome will change how animal torturers are treated in the future. We have heard so much about Dahmer and other serial killers. "If only we had done something sooner" and "if only we'd paid attention when they started torturing animals" and been often said in relation to these horrific serial killers. The fact is that we have to start red-flagging these behaviors as soon as they surface. To say oh it's just a cat, boys will be boys is guaranteeing the next generation of monsters to kill and dismember both our pets and our children and grandchildren.

For his parents, and relatives I keep thinking, "we always believe we know our children, and then, one day we might realize we didn't know them at all.

The same has been said many times for [those]'friends...'"

Thanks to all for your comments. I check on what's up on Weinman every day. Today's 3 September and it remains quiet on the Tyler Weinman story...

Lydia 2 years ago

Hantzis better watch out for his own cats if hes dating the cat killers mother! Tyler needs to spend time in jail, needs to feel what its like to scream for mercy when he gets it up the ass. Everyday I pass his Mothers house, is it any wonder no one has bought it? The sign still says for sale. You cant move away from that, I hope it follows him everywhere, And his parents are partly to blame!!!!

This was an upsetting report, but not a surprising one. I am glad you are making people aware of this correlation; as a counseling professional, I have known of the relationship of which you write, for a long time. As I young woman, I was involved with a young man who tortured my dog. Although I will never know for sure, I will always believe he finally killed her.

Red 2 years ago

Thanks for the updates. Seems like the media is reporting less and less on this case, but as a pet owner, I am VERY concerned and I am interested in seeing what the outcome will be.

As for the Texas case, I recall seeing the initial media reports, but I, like you, am finding very little additional information. An online friend of mine was able to track down the owner of one of the Craigslist cats via MySpace. According to her, the case hasn't even gone to trial yet. Very sad.

Thank you for commenting! YES, I keep a close eye on what's happening on the "Tyler Weinman" part of this story. I have, yet, to find any concluding information on the cat-killer in Texas, although I continue to search.

Getting back to the Weinman-kid, it's still puzzling to me how someone like Weinman, who appears on the suface to be a kid who had the tools to chart-his-own-destiny chose the path he has.

He's due in court, again, in September, and you can be sure I will follow the trial. I do want to investigate the "serial-killer" aspect and how it ties into Tyler Weinman.

It's important to bring all the facts to the fore front.
